Key Speed questions, fixes and result guides.
Practical answers for common key speed problems, confusing results and setup questions — with a direct path back to the live test.
What is a good key presses-per-second score?
There is no universal target because different keys, switches and fingers behave differently. Use the same key and duration for repeatable personal comparisons rather than comparing unrelated setups.
Why are held keys not counted repeatedly?
The test ignores repeat-generated keydown events so holding a key cannot produce an artificially high score. It measures deliberate physical presses only.
Can keyboard switch type affect tapping speed?
Yes. Travel distance, actuation force, return force, keycap shape and layout can all influence repeated tapping comfort and cadence, although technique is usually a major factor too.
Can I test any keyboard key?
Yes. You can use the presets or choose a custom key. Configuration inputs are excluded so entering the custom key does not count as part of the test.
Why are held-key repeats ignored?
Operating systems can generate repeated keydown events when a key is held. Ignoring event.repeat keeps the result focused on separate physical taps.
How accurate is this key speed tool?
Laptop keyboards and external keyboards can behave differently under rapid repeated presses.
What should I do if the key speed result looks wrong?
If the wrong key is counted, reset and select the target again before starting. Check keyboard layout, browser focus and key-remapping software if input does not match.
